Classical Approaches to Thermal Management
Passive Cooling
In Passive Cooling, heat transfer occurs by Natural Convection, characterized by circulation motions within the fluid which are generated by the difference in density of the fluid itself as the temperature varies.
This difference in density, thanks to the force of gravity, creates a hydrostatic thrust and convective motions in which the hot fluid (lower density) rises upwards and the cold one (higher density) falls downwards.
Heat exchange by Natural Convection
does not involve the consumption of electric energy.
Of little interest in major Thermal Management applications.
Ambient Active Cooling
Ambient Active Cooling systems are used only when the operating temperature of the system to be cooled, such as an electrical cabinet or laser equipment, can be kept above ambient temperature without affecting the proper and safe operation of electronic devices. Examples of such cooling systems are filters equipped with fans (filter fans) for electrical panels or liquid coolers (fan coils) for laser equipment.
These systems are among the cheapest ones available on the market and they involve low power consumption, but they do not allow cooling below ambient temperature and they do not provide precise temperature control.
Moreover, with regard to the electrical panels cooling, these systems are NOT suitable for operation in dirty or dusty environments.
The Innovative Approach to Thermal Management
Advanced Active Cooling Solutions (Below-Ambient Active Cooling)
Advanced Active Cooling solutions are used when it is necessary to maintain the operating temperature of the system to be cooled (e.g. electrical cabinet or laser equipment) below the ambient temperature, in order to ensure the proper and safe operation of electronic devices.
Examples of Advanced Active Cooling solutions include:
- Air conditioning systems for electrical cabinets (cabinet coolers)
- Liquid cooling systems (chillers, liquid cooling modules) for medical and industrial laser equipment
Advanced Active Cooling solutions are more expensive than simple cooling fans/radiators, but they have many advantages:
- they allow to maintain the system to be cooled at operating temperature below ambient temperature
- they ensure precise temperature control
- they are based on thermoelectric technology (Peltier modules) or speed-controlled compressor technology with natural refrigerant (eco-friendly fluid)
- with regard to the electrical panels cooling, these systems are suitable for operation in harsh environmental conditions (outdoor installation, dirty and dusty environments, high ambient temperatures) with minimal maintenance required.
Furthermore, Advanced Active Cooling solutions are miniaturized, lightweight, easy to integrate into Customer's equipment, quiet, efficient, innovative and environmentally friendly.
